Consider the Met Gala 2022 to be the ultimate themed event. This year’s theme is “In America: An Anthology of Fashion – Gilded Glamour,” a notion that allows for a wide range of interpretation and draws inspiration from New York’s Gilded Age, when extravagance and grandiosity characterised both the decades and the fashion.
Following on from last year’s theme of “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” this year’s event featured bedazzled ensembles, intricate embroidery, and gold heaped on gold as guests interpreted the Gilded Glamour theme. Corsets were worn by both men and women, accompanied with padded hips, dragging trains, and puffy sleeves, evoking the exaggerated silhouette of the late 1800s.
Stars from TV, movies, politics, and sports did not disappoint, bringing exaggerated silhouettes, exquisite accessories, and dramatic moments to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday evening.
Here are some of the most bizarre and glamorous fits witnessed at the Gala.
Natasha Poonawala
Indian socialite and businesswoman Natasha Poonawalla was the talk of the evening when she wore a bespoke Sabyasachi gold tulle saree and a hand-forged bustier by Schiaparelli to the Met Gala 2022. She added a new twist to desi glamour at fashion’s biggest night. Styled to the T by Anaita Shroff Adajania as she raised the bar of fusing east meets west in artistic panache.
Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian arrived to the Met Gala 2022 red carpet in full Marilyn Monroe mood, with freshly coloured blond hair and an iconic gown originally worn by the Hollywood bombshell. Kardashian shined up the red carpet in the identical Jean Louis gown Monroe wore to sing “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” to John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden on his 45th birthday in 1962. Originally costing USD 12,000, the dress was reputedly so tight that Monroe had to be stitched into it before wearing it. Ripley’s bought the garment at Julien’s Auction in November 2016 for a stunning USD 4.81 million, making it one of the world’s most expensive gowns.
Blake Lively
Blake Lively arrived at Gala in a glittering Versace gown that radically altered as she walked the red carpet with her husband Ryan Reynolds. Her dress transformed from bronze to green, just like the Statue of Liberty. She couldn’t be more in tune with the theme.
Fredrik Robertsson
Fredrik Robertsson sported an ethereal Iris Van Herpen gown at the 2022 Met Gala. While the self-proclaimed ‘fashion addict’ had no intention of becoming a Jared Leto lookalike, the media confused him for the star, and fans began labelling him a doppelganger.
Gigi Hadid
Gigi Hadid may be a boss lady on the runway, but she has surely committed a huge fashion faux pas on the red carpet at the Met Gala 2022. The eldest Hadid sister was seen wearing a Versace deep red latex corset catsuit. She accessorised the look with a colossal puffer jacket in a rich burgundy hue.
Jared Leto and Alessandro Michele
Jared Leto had fashion fans in awe when he arrived at the MET Gala beside Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele. Not only did their suits, leather gloves, and suede handbags match, but they had also grown similar facial hair and long, lush locks pulled back with the exact same type of barrette.
Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish understood the assignment. With the theme being Gilded Glamour, Eilish arrived at the MET Gala red carpet in a Gucci champagne-colored corseted gown with a bustle, lace sleeves, and floral embellishment at the bust.
Emily Ratajowski
Known for her bold and sultry appearances at the MET Gala, Emily Ratajowski, this year, opted for a highly beaded vintage Versace gown that is as sensuous as it is a fashion moment.
Andesron Paak
Anderson Paak was seen showing off some serious dancing skills as he came out in a stunning embroidered coat from Gucci, exuding a nice east London vibe.
Cara Delvingne
Cara Delvingne went quite literal with the theme as she stepped out topless and covered in gold. The super model arrived in a red Dior Haute Couture suit with tails and a walking stick, but swiftly revealed a surprise below. Delevingne took off her jacket, revealing a nude torso covered in glittering gold body paint – and no top.
Cameron Dove
Donning one of the wildest outfits of the evening, Cameron Dove made quite an impression for her debut at the MET Gala. Designed by Iris van Herpen, the extra-terrestrial number had a high neck, structured tassels, firm boning and cut out details. She paired the look with a matching black hairpiece, huge winged eyeliner, simple earrings and white strappy stilettos.
Bad Bunny
Bad Bunny made sure his first Met Gala was one to remember, opting for a cream-colored boilersuit courtesy of Riccardo Tisci for Burberry.
Winnie Harlow
Winnie Harlow took to the carpet a dystopian vibe with a large crystal crown adorning her head. The 27-year-old Jamaican-Canadian fashion model stood out in a futuristic ballerina Iris van Herpen couture gown with a black root-like design at the centre.
As wild as it was, this year’s MET Gala packed a lot of eloquence, expressiveness, passion and vigor to it. Stay tuned for more fashion friendly posts.
