Subbah
Subbah | GenNext 2026 Designer
Subbah is a contemporary Indian fashion label founded by Kolkata-based designer Nimisha Diwakar, whose work looks at Indian textiles, craft and illustration through a distinctly modern lens.
Named among the GenNext 2026 designers, Subbah represents a new generation of Indian fashion that is less about occasion-specific dressing and more about bringing craft, colour and textile into the everyday wardrobe.
Indian textiles, contemporary silhouettes
At the heart of Subbah is a love for Indian textiles from Chanderi and Khadi to organza and cotton silk combined with hand-drawn illustrations, embroidery, prints and considered surface detailing.
The clothes have a sense of craft without feeling overly traditional. Dresses, separates, co-ords, skirts, shirts and occasion pieces are designed to work across wardrobes rather than for just one event.
There is a certain ease to the way Subbah approaches Indian design. Textiles and techniques may be rooted in tradition, but the silhouettes are contemporary, wearable and often playful.
Everyday to occasion
Subbah sits comfortably between everyday dressing, festive wear and occasion clothing.
A Chanderi set can work for a festive afternoon. A printed dress can move from day to evening. A detailed kurta or co-ord can become part of a wedding wardrobe without looking like conventional occasion wear.
It is this flexibility that makes Subbah relevant to the modern Indian wardrobe — clothes that have enough detail to feel special, but enough ease to be worn beyond a single occasion.
A new Indian design language
The GenNext platform has become an important space for discovering emerging Indian designers, and Subbah is part of this new generation looking at Indian fashion without being restricted by old categories of traditional versus contemporary.
For Ciceroni, that makes Subbah an interesting addition to our edit of independent Indian designers — a label where textile, illustration, colour and craft come together in clothes designed for how we dress now.
