It’s a rare feat to spot an academia continuing their professional artistic pursuit through mainstream commerce. Bhavik Shah, an inspirational design teacher, is a classic example of this rare combination. He is adored by his students and his fashion clients alike. His eponymous label ‘Studio Bhavik Shah’ has been growing slowly and steadily in the Ahmedabad fashion scene since 2008. Started as ‘Indian Edition by Bhavik Shah’ way back in 2008, the label went through a gradual transformation from being a show-centric brand to finally having a permanent set-up in the heart of the city- Shivranjini.

Situated just beneath the Shivranjini fly-over, Studio Bhavik Shah is a surprise find for many. Surrounded by the lush sprawling lawns, the studio opens up with a heartening green view. Standing wardrobe rails are stacked with limited edition collection in the display area.
In an exclusive tete-a-tete with Bhavik, we learnt that he graduated in BFA from the Faculty of Fine Arts – M S University, Baroda back in 2002. He was naturally inclined towards design. Thereafter identifying his keen interest in apparel construction, he joined Garment production technology and fashion designing course at NIFT, Gandhinagar, and continued with a Masters in the same, at Istituto Europeo di Design, in Milan, Italy. He always had a curious streak in learning, researching and creating innovative patterns in apparels. Later, he began teaching at city-based fashion design institute – INIFD while pursuing his creative interest of designing.

His love for creating led to the birth of his label in the year 2008. He focused on creating apparels that had a strong amalgamation of the rich textile base and intricate craftsmanship.

The label’s forte is in creating pattern and detail oriented simple garments that stand apart from the cookie-cutter cuts available in the market. The ubiquitous kurta is given a twist with interesting drapes and made quirky by adding patterns in varied fabrics. Silk dresses are given a hint of vintage glamour by adding Sindh province’s exotic embroidered lace. Organic cotton kurtas have intricate pattern detailing to give them a unique designer feel.

While they focus primarily on bespoke wear, lately they have been creating special designs to supply to 3 multi-designer outlets across the country – Collage in Banglore, Theory in Surat and Avakasa in AhmedabadSo what is available at ‘Studio Bhavik Shah’?
