Fashion and lifestyle is always influenced by cultural movements that shape the times. Geo-political changes, development in society, art and literature movement, music scenario and movies – all of these have an impact on each other. So naturally, when we talk about hairstyle trends, we got to acknowledge the fact that every decade seemed to spawn something new, and one or two cuts did come to define that decade.

Historically, humans have had a deep personal relationship with their hair. Apart from prevailing popularities, hair grooming, care and style culture are shaped by traditions, customs and beliefs. The oldest known depiction of hairstyling is hair braiding which dates back about 30,000 years. In history, women’s hair was often elaborately and carefully dressed.

From the 16th to the 19th century, women’s hair became more visible and elaborate. Head covers grew smaller and hairstyles with ornamentation such as flowers, ostrich plumes, ropes of pearls, jewels, ribbons and small crafted objects such as replicas of ships and windmills became normcore.

Fast forward to 2019, and we see recycling of style trends. Here are Ciceroni’s top hairstyle trends in 2019

1. BLUNT BOB

Dramatic and angular, Blunt Bob suits a wide array of face cuts and hair textures. Reviving the 70’s culture, the Blunt Bobs of 2019 are shorter and fairly uncomplicated. Unlike the yesteryear, Blunt Bob today is styled with straight hair to show the sleekness of the haircut. It also makes the face look sharper.

Celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber and Karlie Kloss are the advocate of Blunt Bob. With an influence of popular period shows like Stranger Things, Downton Abbey and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Blunt Bob is at its peak.

Talking about colouring, Suzanne Fernandez, Co-founder at Supafly says “Our fashion forecast for 2019 is the colour purple. Deep violet works well with brunette and dark bases, whereas mauve hues would work well with lighter to icy blondes. This fun colour pop can be incorporated into balayage, highlights or even global if mixed with the right base.”

So how about a Blunt Bob with purple tint?

2. BARRETTES

From humble tiny hair clips that were hardly visible on hair (think: bobby pins), the style has moved to bolder, ornate barrettes that are more for a statement rather than holding the hair in place.

Diamante Clips spelling words like “BOSS”, “BABE” and “GLAM” are present on every celebrity’s updo and at fashion shows. Selena Gomez sported a tongue-in-cheek accessory recently – “UGLY” diamante clip pinned to her braided pony.

There’s something about centre parting which makes the hairstyle look edgier and refreshing. Suitable for Bob, Lob or Long Hair, centre parting can give an impression of a fresh haircut without getting one done.

Till date, many hairstylists cut the customer’s hair depending on the parting. Since centre parting has become a rage, this practice may soon be dissolved.

5. FACE-FRAMING LAYERS

One of the most flattering hairstyles, face-framing layers has unrestrained versatility. No matter the face shape, size or cut, as the name suggests, these layers help frame the face by skimming the cheek and grazing the collarbone.

While styling these layers with an up-do has been a trend from 1996 to 2006, 2019 has added a sleeker option, to style it with a bob cut! Another way you can style these tendrils is with wispy and hair-sprayed hair on the side to make the layers voluminous.

According to Suzanne, if you have a round face you should definitely try face-framing layers. It will lend focus to the cheekbones.

6. FINGER WAVES

Finger Wave is a method of setting hair into waves (curls) that was popular in the 1920s and 1930s and again in the late 1990s. Silver screen actresses such as Bette Davis and Anita Page are credited with the original popularity of finger waves. In their return in the 1990s, the style was popularized by pop stars like Madonna.

Modern iterations of the finger waves look feminine as well as futuristic. The style was also spotted on runway shows of Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Stella McCartney, Jason Wu and Salvatore Ferragamo.
